On Tuesday night I attended a launch at Matchbox Studios in Wellington which showed the two exhibitions of contemporary jewellers, Camille Walton and Mieke de Court.
Although the exhibitions ran side by side, the works of the two designers couldn't have been more different.
The main idea behind Mieke’s jewellery making is to take random and overlooked objects such as chair legs and doorknobs and give them new life as beautiful pieces of jewellery.
Pictured left: Mieke with her mother, Pippa de Court.
Camille takes inspiration from her painting background, where she tries to capture certain aspects of painting such as form and colour, which she literally turns into wearable art.
Although the two designers are both inspired by different ideas, a real genuine originality can be seen throughout both of their works. I will definitely keep an eye out to see how the works of Camille and Mieke will evolve. The pieces really do speak for themselves, and you can see Mieke's Facebook page Mieke de Court Contemporary Jewellery to see more.
