Kick up your heels
Kathryn Wilson Footwear at New Zealand Fashion Week
Friday 2nd September 2011 9pm
C'mon shake a tail feather.
Lingerie + models + shoes = a good time, in anyone's books, and this show was one of the crowd pleasers of Fashion Week for both girls and their guys, with hot models wearing beautiful shoes and nothing but luxe corsets. It was a hard ask to keep one's eyes on their feet! Luckily, the shoes were worth a look.
Below: Last year's winner of NZ's Next Top Model 2010, Danielle Hayes walks in the show, whch drew inspiration from Kim Bassinger in 9 1/2 Weeks.
In an original turn, Kathryn Wilson held a public event for her fans rather than the usual exclusive media and VIP-only events typical of Fashion Week. It drew over 1,700 responses on Facebook who rocked up to the massive shed in Wellesley Strret Auckland city for Friday night's free show; the final of Fashion Week.
It was a multimedia event, with Stephen Tilley's short film documenting Kathryn Wilson's business rise, then the U-shaped catwalk show, and ending with a live performance by Kimbra.
Hands up if you like Kathryn Wilson.
The day after the Fashion Week show, Kathryn Wilson opened a shoebox-shaped pop-up in Britomart precinct. "Opening a pop-up retail store in Britomart is the perfect way for me to dabble in retail, especially during a time when Auckland will be buzzing with World Cup action and women are eager to look gorgeous in new summer shoes for the party season!" she says.
She certainly has business nous. Short-listed as a finalist in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2011, Kathryn puts an emphasis on retail, for revenue and growth. "Building my brand has been about establishing good designs, price points that help product sell through, a steady wholesale business and support in the media and from my industry peers. A retail store will not only help drive revenue, but it will also help me to sharpen my business skills and bring me closer to the customers who keep the brand alive."
Who knows, maybe we'll see a Kathryn Wilson line of lingerie next time?
